“This residence is a demonstration of the dexterity and control of the architect without being an imposition on the neighborhood. The idea (concept) of the home is … about void and fluidity of space rather than dominance. It shows that architecture is more than structure – it is choreography of movement where a village composition creates special spaces between enclosures.”
(Quote from Awards Jury, American Institute of Architects) Phoenix Home & Gardens Magazine
This custom contemporary home was awarded the American Institute of Architects’ “House of the Year Award” in 1998. It has been featured in Phoenix Home & Gardens Magazine, Sedona Magazine and on Channel 3 in
This masterpiece has three distinct elements dictated by its scenic arroyo. The architect established a village using curved rooftops that define three entities – one houses the great room, kitchen, master suite and laundry. Another encompasses the study/den, studio/gym, garage and workshops and the third is a separate guest quarters. There are two bridges – one of steel & wood that brings visitors from the parking area to the entry and the other is an enclosed 40 foot-long hall gallery that connects the kitchen/great room with the study, studio and garage.
The design is organic and dramatic with a truss system that starts low at the street side and curves upward to a height of 22 feet opening the rooms to the rock and forest vistas. Breathtaking Sedona red rock views and sunset enhanced vistas are beautifully captured by the floor to ceiling glass. You approach the house through a gate and cross a bridge over the deep arroyo. As you ascend the wide set of front steps the house seems transparent as you are greeted by its reflective glass wall.
The front door opens into the foyer, where a stone wall separates the foyer from the kitchen. A massive red rock fireplace and red-colored, block walls end and the soft sweep of the whitewashed cedar plank ceiling begin in the great room. The great room includes a conversation area near the fireplace, a lounge space, the dining area, wet bar and the kitchen. The kitchen has a breakfast bar and a fabulous breakfast nook with a custom table and chairs. Like the rest of the great room, it takes full advantage of the extraordinary rock beauty of the site. The master suite, powder room and
laundry room are off the great room and there is a front patio with a hot tub with access off the master. The master suite is well situated to take advantage of the views.
The expansive patio off the great room features views of the red rock mountain peak above the cliff. It is very private with the National Forest to the north and east. You can enjoy the Sedona Lifestyle to the fullest. A long bridge connects the kitchen with the study/den, studio/gym, garage & workshop.
The bridge/hall provides a gallery for artwork. There is an impressive safe in the studio/gym that stays with the house. An outdoor rock walkway from the gallery leads to a separate guest house that is light, bright and roomy. It has two “rooms with views” and a full bathroom.
